Profile
A career built between Ghana and Brazil
Francis Angmortey is a Ghanaian-born singer, percussionist, multi-instrumentalist, African drum and dance tutor, and cultural practitioner based in Brazil. Coming from an Akan heritage and a family of musicians in Accra, Ghana, Francis has developed a strong professional connection between Ghanaian, African, Afro-Brazilian and Latin musical traditions.
He has been based in Brazil since 2014 and has developed extensive experience in musical performance, cultural mediation, percussion workshops, African drum and dance teaching, and musical education, particularly around Afro-diasporic rhythms.
Francis was an active member of the União Cultural Jama de Gana, serving as a percussionist and singer from 2019 to 2021. His involvement in the collective contributed significantly to his artistic development and to his exploration of the relationship between African musical traditions and Afro-Brazilian and Latin rhythms.
He later became the lead vocalist of Gã Star, a position he has held from 2022 to the present.
His cultural and educational work includes the Ijexá with Ghana Project, through which he has participated in musical education, workshops, and cultural activities in Brazil in 2024, 2025 and 2026.
Francis has also participated in a range of cultural and artistic initiatives in Brazil, including programmes connected with African cultural representation, Ghana–Brazil cultural exchange, Black cultural heritage, music education, and Afro-diasporic artistic expression.
As Co-Project Director of the International Orientation Programme, Francis contributes to the programme's cultural, educational and Brazil–Africa engagement objectives, bringing practical knowledge of the Brazilian cultural environment and experience in cross-cultural collaboration.
